Autosport International Show 2017

SBD are celebrating 25 years of motorsport business this year, Steve our managing director standing by the 2.0L XE engine which he started the business with and we are still developing & selling products for today.

We took our 2.0L XE, 2.0L Duratec, Hayabusa and 1.6L EcoBoost engines to the show. Both the XE & Duratec had a fly-by-wire (EGAS) system and new MBE9MD-DISP-CS01 operating on them. The new display was received from MBE on the Wednesday morning just in time for us to bring to the show.

Our 1.6L EcoBoost engine had the prototype Jenvey plenum on along with showing the MBE9A6 Direct Injection ECU with the specially designed & developed wiring harness.

'16-valve specialists, SBD Motorsport are always at the show, and this year sees them celebrating their 20th anniversary - their stand at the event complete with Matt Downers' well-known Duratec powered MK2 Escort (featured most recently in the June 2009 issue). Originally built for sprinting, Matt now uses it for Tarmac rallying, and it looks stunning in its new livery.'

Excerpt from Race Engine Technology March/April 2012 issue, Autosport Show Report:

Words: Ian Bamsey

SBD Motorsport was promoting the products of ECU specialist MBE on its Autosport International stand. SBD's Steve Broughton told me that MBE started out producing ECUs for motorsport, including Toyota rally cars, but found more commercial potential in developing pre-production systems for road cars. That is its core business these days but this has allowed it to translate its technology into some very affordable motorsport ECUs; in essence, Broughton explained, in buying those ECUs the customer benefits from expensive development work paid by roadcar manufacturers.

Broughton showed me the new top-of-the- range MBE motorsport unit, the 9A9, which will run an eight-cylinder engine with port injection and coil-on-plug ignition. It will operate fly-by-wire throttles, up to four variable cam timing units, will control the gearbox, offers launch and traction control and can accommodate closed-loop control with twin lambda sensors and a knock sensor. It is CAN-based for in-vehicle systems communication and features pin-to-pin 'high side drives', avoiding the need for a cluster of relays. All clearly premium, yet affordable.

Broughton also showed me a Ford Duratec competition engine equipped with an MBE ECU and SBD's own butterfly throttle system, together with a Jenvey fly-by-wire control mechanism. In this case the throttle system has been programmed so that the driver can request WOT at a low engine speed, and the actual throttle opening is

Race Engine Technology March/April 2012

automatically moderated to avoid the pick-up problems associated with the use of WOT at low speed. As the crankshaft gathers speed, the throttle opening is tailored accordingly to ensure clean acceleration.

Broughton also told me that SBD has worked with piston manufacturer Omega to develop a piston and con rod package for the naturally aspirated 2.0 litre Duratec I4. The shape of the crown has been optimised while the piston pin is located higher than stock on the basis that a shallower rod angle also helps horsepower. Compared to the use of stock piston, Broughton told me that the output on the SBD dyno is up from 299 to 307 bhp and that customer has found a 15bhp gain.

In the past years we have been at the Autosport International Show on the Kent Cams stand in the main hall.

This year we had on show our latest kit for the standard Hayabusa 1300cc - the supercharger kit. We had run it on the dyno at DTW Engine just before Christmas & achieved 318bhp/162lbft torque.

We have produced drives to suit mid-engine cars e.g. single seaters (set-up on display in the picture) & we are now manufacturing parts to suit front engine cars such as Westfields

This was included in Classic Ford's Autosport show report in March 2008 issue.

Fresh from the success of building a 304bhp 2-litre Duratec (see February issue) SBD was showing off its new four-into-one exhaust manifold for RWD Escorts running Duratec power. Developed on Matt Downer's sprint-spec MkII that we featured way back when the mag first started, it will set you back around £600.

'SBD Motorsport (020 8391 0121, www.sbdev.co.uk) has really got its
teeth into the 2-litre Duratec HE motor and was displaying its 270 bhp kit. For £6375, you’ll get cams and verniers, pistons, rods, the crank
modified to put a keyway in, head and main stud kits, uprated flywheel bolts, new uprated bearings, valve springs, caps and platforms, CNC-machined high-flow head, taper throttle body kit, ready-mapped ECU and harness, dry sump kit — all you need to do is put it all together. Although aimed at the kit car boys, this would be one hell of a motor dropped into a Focus or fwd Escort'

Total Vauxhall, March 2003 issue wrote

"SBD was on hand to show some of its renowned tuning kit for the now legendary C20XE engine. There must have been a billon hours of work in engineering these 'exploded ' engines. Fab. Steve Broughton (the SB in the SB Developments) was on hand to tell us about his latest goodies. There was just too much to list, but we'll be back with him soon."
